My name is Professor Silvia Bunge. I am a faculty member in the Neuroscience Department at the University of California, Berkeley. I am creating a list of all the kids in the Bay Area who might want to be part of research studies. These research studies mean collecting information about how kids learn, think, and grow. Do you think you would want to be on this list? This page describes this list a bit more so you can decide whether you want to be a part of it. Before you decide, you can talk about it with your parents or anyone else you like. If you have any questions about the research, ask your parent to call me.
What will happen if you are on this list (research database)?
If you agree to be on this list and your parents say it’s okay, I will ask you for your birth year and birth month. Then, if there is a research study happening here at Berkeley that is looking for kids your age to participate, they will contact you and your parents, and you can decide if you want to participate in the study. If you want to participate in one study, but not another one, that is totally fine. And if you don’t want to participate in any, that is okay too! Being on this list will just give you the option to participate in studies in the future.
Will good things happen from being on this list?
Being on this list will mean that you will find out about studies you can participate in in the future if you want to.
Are there things you might not like about being on this list?
Once you are on this list, researchers may contact your parents to ask if you want to be part of a study. If you don’t want them to contact your parents anymore, you can tell them to stop, and we will take you off the list.
Do you have to be on this list?
No, you don’t! This is something to be part of only if you want to. Nothing bad will happen if you don’t want to be on this list. Whether you decide to be on it or not will have no effect on you. And remember, you can always change your mind later if you don’t want to be on the list anymore.
