Disagreeing about Relative Meanings

In this study, 5 to 7-year-old children watch a puppet show where a puppet disagrees with the child about whether different novel objects are, e.g., “pretty,” “tall,” or “spotted.” Sometimes the puppets make clear that they’re asserting an _opinion_, while other times they just make the claim outright. We’re interested in how children come to understand that some words (like “pretty”) are entirely subjective, and whether “verbal framing” (like saying explicitly that something is an opinion) helps them recognize at an earlier age that others could have different conceptions of the same objects and definitions for the same word from the ones they themselves have.
